Emergency Extended Benefits will end by November 30th, 2010, unless Congress votes to extend the program.
The Federal Government offers unemployed workers in states with high unemployment rates emergency extended benefits to help out while searching for work. This program works on a four-tier system that gradually reduces the compensation benefits received.
Tier 1 offers unemployed workers with 20 extra weeks at 80 percent of their original UC benefits. Tier 2 offers 14 extra weeks at 56 percent. Tier 3 reduces benefits checks to 50 percent and lasts for 13 weeks. Tier 4 provides 6 weeks at 24 percent of initial benefits payments.
Federal Emergency Extended Benefits Set to End
The bad news is that these extended benefits will end on November 30, 2010, unless Congress decides to extend this deadline. However, the South Caroline Department of Employment continues to accept applications for Emergency Extended Benefits in expectation of Congress extending these programs. If no new measures are taken the Extended Benefits program will phase out as follows.
Tier 1, will end on November 24, 2010. I recommend visiting your local office (click here to find the closest office to you) and ask for the latest information on extended benefits. Alternatively, you can ask when you file over the phone or by leaving a message when you file online.
Tiers 2 to 4 will end on November 30th. Normally unemployed workers will roll from one tier to another automatically. However, if emergency benefits are not extended, you will only roll on to the next tier if you are eligible for the next tier before the 1st of December.
Silver Lining
The good news is South Caroline Department of Employment is still accepting applications. However, you cannot do this online. Visit your local employment office and apply in person. Regardless of y0ur situation and what date your emergency benefits end, contact your local office and apply for your emergency extended benefits.
