  • interstate south carolina SC Employment and Workforce: Interstate Claims Guide

The South Carolina Employment and Workforce has designed a solid and reliable system to process benefit claims. However, this does not mean mistakes and delays do not occur. This is especially the case in situations that involve unemployed workers from other states who move to South Carolina or South Carolina workers who move to another state. In any case, it can often be more complicated and messy to deal with unemployment claims when you cannot talk to someone face to face and must rely completely on phone, fax and online communications. However, you can minimize any inconvenience by understanding how the interstate unemployment benefits system works. This guide provides you with the basic instructions, so you can apply successfully for an interstate claim.

    How to file?

File for unemployment benefits to the state where you worked during most of your base period, regardless of where you now live. The only exceptions to this general rule are federal workers and servicemen and servicewomen who have been honorably discharged from the U.S. military forces.

Call 1.800.529,8339 to start off your claim. Call between 8:30am and 4:00pm. You can also file online from 7am to 6pm. If you choose to file over the phone, consider calling Thursdays, Fridays and weekends, because Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays usually have a higher volume of callers.

How do I extend my unemployment benefits if I have an interstate benefits claim?

The process is similar to a regular benefits extension. Simply call 1.800.529.8339 or 1.866.397.2752. You can also claim for an extension online by clicking here.

I have questions and my local unemployment agency can’t help. Who should I ask?

You can ask any question about your interstate claim by email at remoteinterstate@dew.sc.gov or by phone at 1.866.397.2752. Again, try and call on days with a lower volume of calls.

What time frame am I looking at for an interstate claim?

The time frame for an interstate claim is similar to a regular benefits claim. Expect 2 to 3 weeks to process a straightforward claim (that is a lack of work claim where employer and employee agree on the reason for separation) and 4 to 6 weeks for claims on separations due to the employee quitting, being discharged or still working.

I have filed my interstate claim online, but TelClaim (the telephone remote processing system) will not recognize my SSN. What do I do?

Be patient. Online applications may take up to three business days to clear. If there is any trouble, we will contact you. If more than three business days have passed call the interstate query number.
