  • SC Unemployment Insurance

Workers who had a job and became unemployed through no fault of their own may be eligible to receive unemployment insurance benefits while seeking a new job. Unemployment insurance benefits help bridge the gap between jobs by replacing part of the worker’s lost income.

Unemployment insurance is funded entirely by employers. In South Carolina, nothing is withheld from worker’s pay for these benefits.

6 Important things to know about filing a claim

    1. You must have earned sufficient wages in order to establish an entitlement to benefits. You will receive a determination in the mail advising you of your monetary eligibility.
    2. You must be able to and available for work and be actively seeking full-time employment in order to receive benefits.
    3. If you have quit or been discharged from your job, you may be disqualified from receiving benefits. Your claim will be evaluated and you will be notified of any disqualification that is imposed.

    4. You will not be paid for the first week you are eligible in each benefit year.
    5. Your continuing eligibility to receive benefits will be periodically reviewed.
    6. Unemployment insurance benefits are taxable.
